Nepalese-American fashion designer Prabal Gurung designed outfits for Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani’s daughter Isha Ambani, Gangubai Kathiawadi actor Alia Bhatt, singer Rita Ora, and JoJo Rabbit maker Taika Waititi
The Reliance Retail boss donned a black saree-inspired gown designed by Gurung with statement diamond jewels. Her jewellery comprised layered necklaces, ring and a bracelet. She completed her look with a Chanel doll bag. Isha Ambani’s makeup was done by Tanvi Chemburkar and hairstylist was Yianni Tsapatori
She donned a Prabal Gurung outfit for the 2019 Met Gala as well. She had then worn a voluminous lilac gown with a plunging neckline and feather trims
Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt debuted in Met Gala 2023 in a white pearl embellished Prabal Gurung gown. Bhatt’s gown has been made in India and has drawn inspiration from Chanel brides
The Gangubai Kathiawadi actor said, “I wanted to do something that felt authentic (hello, pearls) and proudly made in India. The embroidery, made with 1,00,000 pearls, is a labour of love by Prabal Gurung. I’m so proud to wear you for my first Met”
Prabal Gurung also styled celebs like singer Rita Ora, actor and director Taika Waititi, Abbott Elementary writer Quinta Brunson and The Amazing Spider-Man actor Kelsey Asbille for the Met Gala this year
Born in 1979, Gurung began his career in New Delhi before moving to New York to complete his studies at Parsons The New School of Design
He then joined Cynthia Rowley and spent two years in design and production teams before he was appointed as director at Bill Blass for 5 years, following which he started his own label
