The advertising industry’s watchdog ASCI has pointed out the steep rise in the number of complaints against celebrities and social media influencers who are promoting products or services, which are not in compliance with the advertising laws of the country
Multiple celebrities have often been pointed out for endorsing ed-tech firms and educational content without any due diligence. Of late, there has been a rise in advertisements for gaming with stakes or real-money gaming, which are not completely legalised in the country. ASCI has now pointed out some high-profile celebrities who are violating the norms by doing such advertisements
According to ASCI, complaints against celebrities witnessed an 803% jump in FY23 to 503 ads, as against 55 in the year-ago period. In 97% of cases processed by ASCI featuring celebrities, they failed to provide any evidence of due diligence
CSK skipper MS Dhoni has the maximum number of complaint reports filed against him. Around 10 complaints have accused him of promoting gaming with stakes which is allowed in various states in the country. He has been associated with Dream 11, which is a fantasy sports game platform with stakes
Known for his YouTube channel BB Ki Vines and the web series Dhindhora, Bhuvan Bam has been listed second by ASCI with 7 complaints of non-compliance filed against him. He is the brand ambassador of the online gaming company, WinZO
Last seen in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, Jim Sarbh has been named by ASCI with 6 non-compliance reports filed against him. In 2022, he was roped in as the brand ambassador for MPL Poker, a platform for online gaming with stakes
After MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli is the other cricketer named by ASCI as he is facing 5 non-compliant reports. He was roped in as the brand ambassador of the Mobile Premier League
Bollywood celebrities who have been named by ASCI for doing advertisements without any due diligence include Shraddha Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Sara Ali Khan, Rahul Dev and Kriti Sanon
Other personalities pointed out by ASCI for doing ads and endorsements without any due diligence are Kajal Agarwal, G Venkatraman, Manoj Tiwari among others
