Every year India marks December 23 as National Farmers Day or Kisan Diwas to honour and recognize the hard work of farmers as the backbone of the country
December 23 also marks the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India. Singh is popularly referred to as the 'champion of India's peasants.’ Hence, his birthday is commemorated as National Farmers Day

Born in Uttar Pradesh in the year 1902, Chaudhary Charan Singh received his bachelor’s degree in science in 1923, and finished his masters from Agra University in 1925. Charan Singh was also a practitioner of law
Chaudhary Charan Singh was deeply connected with the farmers of this nation and aimed to work for rural India. He authored several pamphlets and books including ‘Abolition of Zamindari’, ‘India’s Poverty and its Solution’ and ‘Co-operative Farming X-rayed’
Chaudhary Charan Singh also served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and it was under his tenure that the Land Holding Act of 1960 came into force. The rule limited the amount of land a person could hold
