National Mathematics Day is celebrated on December 22 to mark the birth anniversary of legendary self-taught mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan
Born on 22 December 1887 in Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan was a mathematics genius. He had an uncanny ability to solve complex mathematical problems
In 1913, Ramanujan wrote and sent his mathematical discoveries to an English mathematician GH Hardy who then invited Ramanujan to Cambridge
During the five years of partnership, Hardy and Ramanujan discovered several formulas such as Hardy-Ramanujan asymptotic formula, and Hardy-Ramanujan theorem
In 1918, Ramanujan was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and the first Indian to be appointed as a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge
Ramanujan's genius was ranked by Hardy in the same class as giants like Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler, German mathematician Gauss, Greek mathematician Archimedes, and Isaac Newton
A year later, Ramanujan returned to India after being diagnosed with tuberculosis and severe vitamin deficiencies. He died in 1920 at the age of just 32
On Mathematics Day 2022, we also remember a host of Indian mathematicians such as Aryabhata, Neena Gupta, and Shakuntala Devi who was popularly called as the 'Human Computer'
