Popular American sitcom The Big Bang Theory is in trouble. A political analyst Mithun Vijay Kumar has filed a lawsuit against Netflix over an episode in the show
Mithun Vijay Kumar claims that the Big Bang Theory, Season 2, Ep. 1 features offensive remarks against Madhuri Dixit. “It’s important to hold media companies accountable for the content they distribute, and I hope that Netflix India will take this matter seriously”, he alleged
Big Bang Theory’s two main characters Raj Koothrapalli and Sheldon Cooper played by Kunal Nayyar and Jim Parson respectively had a scene where they compared Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit in a derogatory manner
Sheldon called Aishwarya Rai “a poor man’s Madhuri Dixit” to which Koothrapalli replied saying, “Aishwarya Rai is a goddess, by comparison, Madhuri Dixit is a leprous prostitute.”
The petitioner Mithun Vijay Kumar has called these remarks, “highly derogatory and offensive towards Indian culture and women”
A notice has been sent to Netflix’s office in Mumbai. It stated that such content can have an adverse impact on society and perpetuate harmful stereotypes and discrimination against women. Netflix should remove content that promotes sexism and misogyny
