Amid the row over Prabhas’ latest pan-India film Adipurush, Ramanand Sagar’s OG Ramayan will air again on Shemaroo TV from July 3 at 7:30 pm
Shemaroo TV shared the promo of the super hit mythological show on its Instagram handle and wrote in Hindi: “We are bringing to you all dear viewers the world-famous mythological serial ‘Ramayan’… Watch ‘Ramayan’ from July 3 at 7:30 pm only on your favourite channel #ShemarooTV”.
The iconic serial was adapted from the Hindu epic Ramayana and focused on the journey of Lord Rama from his birth to exile of 14 years along with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshman and his victory against Ravana, the demon king of Lanka
The show featured Arun Govil as Lord Rama, Dipika Chikhlia as Sita, Sunil Lahri as Lakshman, late Arvind Trivedi as Ravana, and late Dara Singh as Lord Hanumana in lead roles
The show was originally aired from January 25, 1987 to July 31, 1988 and garnered massive response from the audience. The show was recently aired again during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown on public demand
The decision to air the show again comes amid the Adipurush controversy. Ever since its theatrical release on June 16, Adipurush has been embroiled in a controversy after another due to its dialogues and the depictions of the characters
Cinemagoers on Twitter said the performances of the film were not at all convincing and the experience of watching the Prabhas film was made worse due to the crass dialogues and its VFX
Arun Govil, who played Ram in the iconic serial, slammed Adipurush and called it ‘Hollywood ki cartoon’ and questioned why the makers modernised the epic. Govil said: “What was wrong with the depiction we have all known and loved for all these years? What was the need to change things? Perhaps the team doesn’t have proper faith in Lord Rama and Sita, and that is why they made these changes”
Sunil Lahri, who played Lakshman in the show, said Adipurush left him sorely disappointed. He said people in the theatre were not happy while watching the film and were wondering what is being shown in the name of Ramayana
Adipurush has been made on a humongous budget of Rs 500-700 crore, making it one of the most expensive films in Indian cinema. After 12 days of its release, the film is struggling to cross the Rs 300 crore mark at the domestic box office. Adipurush has collected Rs 281.02 crore on its second Tuesday, as per Sacnilk
