The latest release of the Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2024 showcased a surge in the presence of Indian universities, with 91 institutions making it onto the prestigious list. This substantial increase is a notable upswing from just 19 universities in 2016 but none of these universities have made it to the top 200.
Five of India's leading institutions have demonstrated significant improvements. IISc, for instance, has risen from the 251-300 band to the more prestigious 201-250 band. But it is the top-ranking Indian university. There are no universities on the list in the 200 ranks above IISc.
Anna University, Aligarh Muslim University, and Bharathiar University have also ascended to higher bands.
While IISc's ranking marks its return to the global top 250, a feat not accomplished since 2017, other sought-after Indian universities rank after 500.
Two Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) - Guwahati and Patna - and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, have climbed two bands higher, ascending into the world's top 800 universities, transitioning from their previous rankings in the 1001-1200 bracket to the 601-800 range.
Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University have been ranked between 501–600. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences has secured rank in the 501–600 bracket.
The 2024 edition of the rankings encompasses a diverse pool of 1,904 universities hailing from 108 countries and regions. This expansion signifies a significant growth compared to the 1,799 institutions evaluated in the previous year.
The Times Higher Education ranking methodology comprises five essential pillars: teaching quality, research excellence, research environment, international outreach, and industry connections. In the 2024 rankings, four new metrics have been introduced, with three specifically focusing on research quality and one examining the institutions' achievements in securing industry-related patents.
