Bizzare tea shop in Ahmedabad

There have been a few bizarre chaiwalas in the recent past but here is one which is over seven decades old. A 72-year old tea shop in Lal Darwaja region of Ahmedabad is a restaurant built on a graveyard

Lucky Restaurant

Lucky Restaurant is a place where you can enjoy a cup of tea and bun maska while sitting next to a grave as the tea shop has actual graves inside it. A vlogger duo on Instagram called ‘hungrycruisers’ shared the story of this restaurant.

Lucky Restaurant’s motto: Respect the dead

The place runs with the motto - “respect the dead, as you respect the living”. Every morning the staff cleans the graves and then adorns them with fresh flowers.

Restaurant on a graveyard

As per the vlogger duo, the owner of the restaurant, Krishnan Kutty, bought the place without knowing that it’s a graveyard. But, he decided to go ahead with his plan of turning the place into a food joint. So, he installed iron bars around the graves to protect them from any tampering. He then built the sitting areas around the graves.

The MF Hussain connection

Lucky Restaurant was reportedly a frequent hangout place for the legendary artist MF Hussain. He even gifted one of his own hand-made paintings to the owner in 1994. The painting still hangs in the shop.

One user wrote about how one should respect the dead and not make a commercial place on top of their dead bodies and put their graves on display. Another user supported this criticism, “I know people are getting weird day by day but not this much️.”

Cuisine to ‘die’ for
