The first Solar Eclipse of 2023 will fall on April 20. It is being termed as a rare Hybrid Solar Eclipse or Surya Grahan as it will neither be a Partial Solar Eclipse nor a Total Solar Eclipse. The duration of this rare Solar Eclipse will just be one minute long. A Solar Eclipse happens once in 18 months in one part of the world or the other
During this remarkable event, the Eclipse shifts from Total Solar Eclipse to an Annular (ring-shaped) Eclipse because the moon's shadow moves across the earth's surface. This occurrence takes place only a few times in centuries
The rare Hybrid Solar Eclipse will not be visible in India. However, it will be visible from the South Pacific region, western Australia, Indonesia, East Timor, Indian Ocean, and Antarctica
Though this year’s first Surya Grahan won’t be visible in India, the rare Hybrid Solar Eclipse can be viewed from
- Western Australia: From 10:29 pm to 10:35 pm EDT on April 19 (2:29 to 2:35 GMT, April 20)
- Indonesia: From 11:23 pm to 11:58 pm EDT on April 19 (3:23 to 3:58 GMT, April 20)
- East Timor: From 11:19 pm to 11:22 pm EDT on April 19 (3:19 to 3:22 GMT, April 20)
Ningaloo Eclipse 2023 is the name given to this rare Solar Eclipse that will bring total darkness and create a 'ring of fire' on April 20. Its name is derived from the Ningaloo coast of Australia, which is among the best locations to view the eclipse from
As per certain reports, here are some precautions to be taken during Surya Grahan:
- Avoid watching the Solar Eclipse with the naked eye. Either visit a planetarium and watch it via telescope if you are in a location where it is visible from
- Avoid sleeping, as per certain cultural and religious beliefs
- Avoid cooking or eating during this period, as per certain cultural and religious beliefs
- As per the Hindu tradition, temples remain closed during this period
NASA will telecast the Total Solar Eclipse live from Australia. The images and videos of Surya Grahan 2023 will also be shared widely during the rare phenomenon. Planetariums and astronomical clubs will also be live telecasting the Solar Eclipse
Eid-Ul-Fitr will fall on April 20 with the occurrence of the new moon. The rare celestial event Hybrid Solar Eclipse coinciding with Eid-Ul-Fitr has delighted sky gazers across the globe
