As per the astronomical calendar, the year 2023 will witness four major eclipses, out of which two will be solar cclipses also known as Surya Grahan and two will be lunar eclipses also known as Chandra Grahan
The first eclipse of the year is expected on April 20 which will be a Total Solar Eclipse. This rare hybrid solar eclipse occurs when Moon passes between Earth and the Sun thereby totally or partially obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth
The Total Solar Eclipse will not be visible in India. It can be witnessed in North West Cape peninsula, Western Australia, East Timor, as well as Damar Island and Indonesia
Penumbral Lunar Eclipse is expected to take place on May 5, 2023. It will be completely visible over Asia and Australia and will be seen rising over Africa and much of Europe. This will be India’s first lunar eclipse of 2023
Annular Solar Eclipse is expected to occur on the intervening night of October 14 and 15. The Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, hence blocking the sunlight from reaching Earth. It can not be viewed from India as it will affect the US, Mexico and parts of Latin America
A Partial Lunar Eclipse would occur on the intervening night of October 28 and 29, 2023 and it will be visible in India. As per reports, 12.6 percent of the Moon will remain in Earth’s shadow
As per reports, one should avoid glancing at Surya Grahan or solar eclipse with the naked eye. There are a few planetariums and astronomical centres, which provide protective lenses and glasses for safe viewing
Various planetarium and astronomical centres and clubs will be arranging events for viewing lunar eclipse. Some of them are Nehru Planetarium in Delhi, Indira Gandhi Planetarium in Lucknow and more
In 2022, there were two total lunar eclipses and two partial solar eclipses
