Harish Salve secured a significant victory for India at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by overturning Pakistan's military court's death sentence on Kulbhushan Jadhav. After the victory, the Islamabad High Court was forced to make it clear that it was their own responsibility to ensure Jadhav gets a fair trial. The issue of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) has been a well-known challenge for Indian banks and the economy. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened this problem during the lockdown. To alleviate financial stress, the RBI introduced loan repayment moratoriums, but this move had mixed consequences. Later, in a significant legal development, Harish Salve represented the Indian Banks Association, urging the court to lift the stay on declaring assets of defaulting companies as NPAs

On November 24, 2020, Harish Salve represented Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Supreme Court. The case involved the dismissal of a BSF Constable, Tej Bahadur, who challenged PM Modi's election from Varanasi. The Supreme Court rejected Bahadur's plea, as he had submitted conflicting nomination papers without requesting additional time, which led to the rejection of his papers for lacking an Election Commission certificate, confirming his dismissal was not due to corruption or disloyalty

In October of 2020, there was a concerning attack on media freedom in India, particularly against Republic Media Network. Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami was arrested in a reopened abetment to suicide case. Harish Salve represented Arnab, arguing against the Bombay High Court's denial of bail. The Supreme Court granted interim bail and emphasised the importance of personal liberty, urging High Courts to prevent the misuse of criminal law

Arnab Goswami's Bail

Harish Salve has a track record of taking on pro-bono cases in the pursuit of personal liberty. He famously charged just Re 1 for representing India in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case, as disclosed by the late former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. During his representation of Arnab Goswami in October-November 2020, Salve didn't charge any fee. Additionally, on November 24, a retired Army officer's wife, unable to afford legal counsel, specifically requested Harish Salve as her lawyer when appearing before the Supreme Court. Salve agreed to represent her without charge, emphasising that it was a pro bono commitment when the Chief Justice of India inquired about the matter
