During the inauguration of the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) complex named ‘Bharat Mandapam’ at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, PM Narendra Modi mentioned the ‘Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum’. The proposed museum will be the largest museum in the world. PM Modi said, “Soon, the biggest museum of the world – ‘Yuge Yugeen Bharat’ – will be constructed in Delhi.”

The term ‘Yuge Yugeen Bharat’ comes from Sanskrit, which means “everlasting India”. The new museum will encapsulate India’s rich and diverse history.

Yuge Yugeen Bharat: Meaning

The proposed museum will be spread over a massive area of 1.17 lakh square metres. The building will have 950 rooms built across the basement, ground floor and two additional floors. The museum will also pay homage to ancient Indian empires like the Mauryans, Guptas, and Kushans, and showcase the struggles endured during the British occupation

The new museum will be divided into two parts – North Block and South Block of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The two blocks have long been the centre of India’s power as it houses the office of the Prime Minister and other major ministries.

Currently, the largest museum on the globe is the Louvre museum situated in Paris, France. The museum was first opened on August 10, 1793, under the rule of Napoleon. The Louvre has nearly 73,000 square metres of exhibition space and currently has 3,80,000 objects including 35,000 works of art.

Situated in Saint Petersburg, the State Hermitage Museum is built on 66,842 square metres of area.  The museum, which was founded by Catherine the Great, houses 3 million items.
