Feted as a hero for his role in helping France and the allies in the First World War, Louis Renault was honoured with the Grand Cross of the Lgion d'honneur, France's highest award for civil and military achievement.
However, his seeming capitulation to the Germans, who invaded France during World War 2, earned him the ire of the nationalists after the war, resulting in the nationalisation of his company. Renault, once the darling of his country, was now a pariah - and died a lonely man in prison before facing trial.
