Standard Chartered Bank's first overseas branch opened in Calcutta in 1858. Today, StanChart's Indian arm is the third-largest contributor to its global profits, after Singapore and Hong Kong.
"We are more local than any international bank, and more international than any local bank," says Sunil Kaushal, Regional Chief Executive of StanChart for India and South Asia.
The Government of India honoured Standard Chartered Bank in 2008 by launching a commemorative postal stamp to mark Standard Chartered's 150th anniversary in India.
