COVID-19 impact: 83% restaurants not open, 10% permanently shut

According to a survey by food aggregator Zomato, 83 per cent of restaurants in the country are not open for business, while 10 per cent have shut down permanently, and additional 30 per cent are anticipated to not reopen at all. Remaining 43 per cent are closed but are likely to open as the situation normalises.

Dining out industry in India is operating at 8-10 per cent of pre-COVID level, as per the survey. Only 19 per cent restaurants are operational in Bengaluru.

Even in cities where restrictions have been lifted, only 17 per cent dine-outs are open for business. In the national capital, 88 per cent restaurants are still shut, and only 12 per cent are operational.

Most of the customers plan to decrease spending on dining out in the near future and some of this spends will shift to food delivery. In Hyderabad, 21 per cent restaurants are now open.

Kolkata has the highest percentage of open restaurants. 29 per cent restaurants are open for business, but 71 per cent are still not operational.

Only 9 per cent of restaurants are currently operational in Chennai, and many have shut permanently.
