ViewershipThe total viewership of Indian Premier League 2018, referred to as bikini cricket, grew by 40 per cent from around 500 million last year. The online viewership more than doubled this year.After a decline of 5.55 per cent in viewership in 2016, vis-a-vis viewership in 2015, the viewership for the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year saw an annual increase of nearly 14 per cent.
Champions and runners-upThe winners of the IPL 2018 final Chennai Super Kings received a prize money of Rs 20 crore, Rs 5 crore more than what last season's winners received. The runner-up pocketed Rs 12.5 crore.
Smart spendersAccording to estimates by the Board of Control for Cricket, each team will earn a profit of at least Rs 75 crore this season. Some teams could generate as much as Rs 100-125 crore in profit.Teams during the marathon of Indian Premier League auction in January saw all major teams investing in star players for profitable returns. Kolkata Knight Riders spent the most money Rs 80 crore and CSK spent the least Rs 73.5 crore.
Money spinnerThe steep rise in fortunes for the teams and the Board of Control for Cricket in India is largely on the back of the Rs 16,348 crore that Star India will pay over the next five years for Indian and global media rights of the tournament.
