The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has flagged serious financial irregularities in the Uttarakhand government's handling of afforestation funds. The 1,500-page report, presented during the state's Budget session, revealed that between 2019 and 2022, ₹13.86 crore from the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) was diverted for unauthorized expenditures. According to the report, funds meant for afforestation projects were misused for unrelated expenses, including tiger safari projects, legal fees, personal travel, and office purchases such as iPhones, laptops, and refrigerators. The revelations have triggered political reactions, with former Chief Minister Harish Rawat calling the misuse a "serious violation." While Uttarakhand's Forest and Finance Ministers have responded to the findings, any further action will now depend on the Pushkar Dhami government.
