Droughts have been endemic in independent India and have taken their toll on the domestic economy. In fact, India ranks 10th globally in terms of economic damage due to drought since 1970 with a total loss of $2.3 billion. Still, drought accounts for only a small fraction of the havoc wrought by natural calamities in the country.
