To capitalise on the growing utility vehicles segment of the Indian auto market, General Motors India recently launched
Chevrolet Enjoy, pitting the vehicle head-on with Maruti's Ertiga.
GM has priced Enjoy very competitively, with the multi-purpose vehicle available at an introductory price between Rs 5.49 lakh and Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
Chevrolet Enjoy is available in both petrol and diesel options. The petrol model is powered by a 1.4 litre engine and costs between Rs 5.49 lakh and Rs 6.99 lakh. The diesel variant runs on a 1.3 litre engine and is available at Rs 6.69 lakh and Rs 7.99 lakh. The vehicle will have 7-seater and 8- seater options.
On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki
Ertiga is priced between Rs 5.98 lakh and Rs 8.7 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
GM India has been able to price Enjoy competitively as it has achieved substantial localisation at the start of regular production. It will also benefit buyers through a lower cost of ownership as a result of lower parts prices and the ready availability of spare parts.
The utility vehicles have been a brighter spot in an otherwise lackluster auto market in India. Car sales in India fell 6.69 per cent during 2012-13, the first drop in a decade. However, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers sees the utility vehicle growing at 11-13 per cent in 2013-14, as compared to 3-5 per cent growth for the car segment.
Pointing out that the buying pattern of customers is changing from small cars to bigger cars and utility vehicles, SIAM President S Sandilya recently said, "The
utility vehicle (UV) sales will continue to increase at a good rate on account of new model launches by many players."
