The government has notified new norms that will ensure Indian car makers follow a minimum level of fuel efficiency from April 2017.
The new mileage for cars and utility vehicles has been fixed at 18.2 km per litre, which amounts to a 15 per cent increase over the existing average mileage, reports The Economic Times.
An automaker can still sell cars with mileage below 18.2 km on condition that the firm should sell cars with more mileage to ensure the average mileage of all models meets the rule.
Car makers will have to ensure that the average weight of vehicles is kept at 1,145 kg to determine fuel efficiency, the ET report says.
