Mahindra Scorpio facelift launched at Rs 7.98 lakh

The top-of-the-line S10 variant was compared with similar variants from Toyota Innova  and Tata Safari Storme, demonstrating that the Scorpio comes with greater features and at a lesser price.

The new generation Mahindra Scorpio promises to live up to the expectation of being a whole new beast. At the launch on Thursday, it was seen to have more aggressive and contemporary styling on the outside, along with several technically advanced features on the inside.

Price wise, the top-of-the-line S10 variant was compared with similar variants from Toyota Innova  and Tata Safari Storme, demonstrating that the Scorpio comes with greater features and at a lesser price. A similar comparison was also drawn with crossover Renault Duster RxZ and Honda City diesel.

Body platform

The body of the latest Scorpio has been fitted in a completely new modular ladder frame chassis. This new platform from the Utility Vehicle (UV) manufacturer will also be used for future vehicles by the company, as per President of Passenger Car and Farm Equipment Division Pawan Goenka.      

The new platform from Mahindra comes with a new Clutch, highly refined engine, a new front suspension, chassis, Antilock Braking System  (ABS) and front axle disconnect. In addition, Mahindra claims that new multi tuning shock absorbers result in a more comfortable ride and the vehicle now encounters lesser body roll during cornering.  

New technology

>Cushion suspension technology- smooth ride - Hydro form crush tip at front, resulting in better safety

External changes

>An imposing new front grille with chrome plating - Bonnet scoop - New parking lights- called as LED eyebrows - New dual projector headlamps - New LED tail lamps - Dual tone applique on rear door- silver and black colour - 17-inch alloy wheels for towering stance

Interiors

>Blue grey interiors - Brand new instrument cluster - A dual tone dashboard (black/grey) - AC vents with chrome - Sporty steering with audio controls - 6-inch touch screen infotainment with navigation (DVD/Aux/Bluetooth) - Fully Automatic temp control - Intellipark (Reverse park assist) - Tyre tronics- for gauging tyre pressure

Safety

>Dual front airbags - ABS - Panic braking- a new feature, whereby if the driver is unable to apply brakes in a situation, hazard lights blink automatically and brakes are applied.

New colours

Molten Red and Regal blue have been introduced as new colours on the SUV. In addition, Firy Black and Mist silver will continue to be available as earlier.

Engine and Transmission

Mahindra explained that the engine has remained the same, as has been liked by customers in the past, except that now it generates greater torque, which would imply better maneuvering. The mHawk engine makes 121 bhp of power and 320 Nm of peak torque, up from 290 Nm in the earlier version. It is mated to a brand new 5-speed transmission, which is claimed to result in better performance and fuel efficiency, and is easier to use.  

It will now be easier to bring out the Mahindra Scorpio from corners and U-turns, as its turning radius has been reduced from 5.7 m to 5.4 m.

Fuel efficiency

Mahindra claimed how fuel efficiency of the Scorpio has gone up over the years, starting from 11.2 kmpl back in 2002. The new generation Scorpio gives a company claimed mileage of 15.37 kmpl.

Speaking at the launch, Goenka explained how the latest Scorpio demonstrates a quantum leap in terms of performance, technology and comfort in the SUV segment.
