Mahindra launches electric commercial vehicles to tap the logistics and passenger market

To tap the growing popularity of environment friendly vehicles in major urban centres, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), part of the $17.8-billion Mahindra group, launched eSupro - India's first zero emission, all-electric cargo and passenger vans.

M&M had acquired the Bangalore-based Reva Electric in 2010 that made the two seater Reva passenger car. Now it is expanding the portfolio and the new eSupro platform is part of its strategy to usher in a whole new concept in cargo transportation and people movement. It also sells the E2O passenger cars as part of Mahindra's vision of Future Mobility.

These two zero-emission variants - eSupro Cargo Van and eSupro Passenger Van - will have a range of 112 km on a full charge, ideal for intra-city transportation and are priced at Rs 8.45 lakh and Rs 8.75 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi, post state subsidy and FAME incentives).

Speaking at the eSupro launch, Pravin Shah, President and Chief (Automotive) at M&M said, "As one of the pioneers in integrated mobility solutions in India, it has always been our endeavour to make electric vehicles more accessible. The launch of eSupro will usher in a whole new concept in emission-free cargo transportation and people movement. Going forward, the eSupro will provide a much needed fillip to companies in the B2B and e-commerce segment."

The market for the electric vehicles is not growing so fast, but M&M has ventured into the commercial segment for last-mile connectivity. Its eSupro platform is ideally suited for deployment in e-commerce, courier services and transportation companies for intra-city use. It has tied up with Big Basket online grocery store for its zero emission vehicles.

The eSupro is a battery-powered, zero emissions electric van with a Direct Drive Transmission that allows single speed gearbox for speed management of the vehicle to cruise through traffic effortlessly without shifting gears. Its charging is as simple as charging your mobile phone by plugging into a 15-amp plug point and get 0-100 per cent charge in 8 hours 45 mins. The 72V Lithium Ion Batteries pack generates 25kW motor that runs 112 kms with a top speed of 60km per hour.

Mahindra has used regenerative braking, helping the van to recover energy it dispenses when brakes are applied. It also has the Revive R emergency feature that gives 7 km of extra range once you are out of charge.
