Volkswagen to hike Polo prices by over 2.9%

Car maker Volkswagen says it will increase prices of its small car Polo by over 2.9 per cent with effect from January 1, 2011, on account of rising input costs.

Car maker Volkswagen on Wednesday said it will increase prices of its small car Polo by over 2.9 per cent with effect from January 1, 2011, on account of rising input costs.

".... starting January 1, 2011, this popular hatchback (Polo) will witness a hike starting at 2.9 per cent," the company said in a statement.

Customers who book Polo till December 31 this year will be offered the present prices, the statement added.

Commenting on this price increase, Volkswagen Group Sales India Director (Passenger Cars) Neeraj Garg said: "We have been facing constant rise in input cost over the past several months and have tried our best to absorb it.

"However, in order to continue to maintain our quality standards that our customers expect from us, we have had to increase the price by a small percentage."

The Polo was launched in India in March 2010 and has recorded sales of over 17,000 units till November. Its price starts from Rs 6.16 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi)

Earlier, major car makers such as Hyundai Motor India and General Motors had also said to increase the prices to offset the pressure from raw materials, including natural rubber.
