The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is entrusted with the task of formulating and administering policies for road transport, national highways and transport research with an aim to increase mobility and efficiency of the road transport system in the country. In three out of the last 10 years the ministry had overspent its allocated budget. The total length of roads in India at the end of FY19 stood at 59,03,293 km, out of which 1,32,499 Km are national highways.
Since Nitin Gadkari took over the ministry, 13,31,149 km of total roads have been constructed. Out of this 34,508 km of national highways have been completed. Because of the performance of the ministry, India has become the fastest highway developer in the world building 27 km of highway every day. The ministry has been allocated a budget of Rs 83,015 crore for FY20.
