Pune is battling a growing health crisis as Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare immunological nerve disorder, has gripped the city. With 101 reported cases and one death, the situation has prompted the Union Health Ministry to dispatch a team to investigate. GBS, caused by the immune system attacking the nerves, can result in sudden numbness, muscle weakness, and, in severe cases, paralysis. Dr. Kunal Bahrani, a neurologist, explains that the condition may be triggered by consuming contaminated water or food, leading to infections such as diarrhoea and abdominal pain. It can also be linked to infections like dengue and chikungunya. The Maharashtra government has formed a Rapid Response Team to address the alarming spike in cases. However, what raises further concern is that 16 of the diagnosed patients are currently on ventilator support. Ground reports reveal possible contamination in local water sources, with visuals from Pune and its surrounding villages highlighting the issue. With the situation escalating, authorities are working to identify and mitigate the root cause of this outbreak.
