The latest report from the National Statistical Organisation (NSO) indicates notable shifts in the monthly spending and consumption habits of Indian households. While expenses on food items and education have decreased, there has been an increase in spending on medical bills, transportation, rent, and items like pan, tobacco, and intoxicants. In 2011, urban households allocated 42.6% of their monthly budget to food, which has now decreased to 39%, while rural households reduced their food expenditure from 52.8% to 46.38%. The consumption of cereals, pulses, vegetables, edible oils, salt, and sugar has notably declined, alongside reduced spending on education, fuel, lighting, clothing, and footwear.
