Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju fiercely criticized the INDIA bloc on Thursday for its objections to the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024. Rijiju asserted that the NDA government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is achieving what the Congress-led UPA could not during its tenure. The bill, introduced today, proposes renaming the Waqf Act, 1995 to the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act, and aims to streamline Waqf property registration through a central portal. Rijiju defended the bill as a corrective measure addressing past mistakes, emphasizing that extensive consultations preceded its introduction. He urged support for the bill, highlighting that it is based on the Sachar Committee report, which Congress commissioned to recommend reforms in the Muslim community. Accusing the Opposition of prioritizing vote bank politics over genuine reform, Rijiju alleged that Waqf lands are controlled by mafia groups and that Muslims have been misled. He assured that the bill would not infringe on religious freedoms, citing a Supreme Court ruling that Waqf boards are not covered by Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution.
