Five years ago, Prime Minister Modi made a bold, risky call that has now materialized—ushering in Modi-Trump 2.0. These two leaders, who share a rare and visible friendship, have now set the stage for a major shift in India-US relations. Modi has become only the second Indian Prime Minister to secure a third term, while Trump has clinched a second, non-consecutive term as the U.S. President. Together, they are poised to take the India-US partnership to new heights. A tweet from Trump a week before his victory highlights the friendship between the two leaders. In the tweet, Trump pledged to strengthen his bond with Modi, signaling that the incoming Trump administration would further bolster this unique partnership. Under Trump 2.0, India stands to benefit significantly. Trump’s strong rhetoric against China aligns with India’s ongoing concerns, and the new administration could place increased economic and diplomatic pressure on China, particularly in the context of de-escalation in the Himalayas. Trump’s stance on Pakistan’s actions against terror could also offer India greater strategic space, particularly in Kashmir. Additionally, his firm position against extremist groups like Khalistani militants will likely ease tensions with the US and Canada, repairing relations that had soured under the Biden administration. With stronger defence ties, including further military deals, and the strengthening of trade, economic, and cultural relations, Trump 2.0 promises to deliver much more for India.
