Nehru's 'Mistakes' On Kashmir Led To Suffering Of J&K People, Says Home Minister Amit Shah

The day Supreme Court upheld the abrogation of special status to Jammu & Kashmir, Home Minister Amit Shah escalated the attack on former PM Jawaharlal Nehru for having erred by delaying J&K’s accession to India, declaring an untimely ceasefire during the 1947 war with Pakistan when Indian Army was close to getting control of entire Kashmir, and taking the issue to the United Nations. Shah went on to quote Nehru himself to buttress his point that declaring a ceasefire and going to the United Nations was a mistake. “After the experience of the United Nations, I have concluded that we cannot expect a satisfactory outcome from there. I thought the decision to declare a ceasefire was good but we could not make the right decision or assessment. In retrospect, we should have deliberated more before reaching the ceasefire decision, although these are past mistakes,” he quoted from Nehru’s statement on record, after Congress MP Digvijaya Singh asked him to authenticate his repeated charge against Nehru for his “Kashmir blunders”.
