Following nationwide protests over a distorted rank list in the medical entrance exam, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that grace marks awarded to 1,563 NEET-UG candidates will be cancelled. The NTA informed the Supreme Court on Thursday, stating that the scorecards for these candidates will be scrapped. A retest is scheduled for June 23, with the option for candidates to opt out and retain their original scores without grace marks. The results will be released before June 30, ensuring no delays to the counseling scheduled for July 6. Students have voiced concerns that a re-examination won't provide justice, as some top scorers had reportedly learned the leaked questions. This year's NEET-UG exams were controversial, with 67 aspirants receiving All India Rank 1, including six from the same center in Faridabad. After cancelling grace marks, 61 students now hold the top rank, a number still unusually high. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan denied allegations of a question paper leak, maintaining the NTA's integrity. However, the Supreme Court has issued a notice regarding the alleged paper leak and other irregularities but confirmed that the NEET-UG 2024 counseling process will proceed as planned.
