Sri Lanka is set to save over 1,000 million Sri Lankan Rupees annually by reducing the excessive security provided to former presidents. From January 1, 2025 security personnel for ex-presidents will be reduced, in line with the government's efforts to cut costs and address security inefficiencies. Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala emphasized that the move aligns with government policy to ensure fairness and curb the culture of VIP convoys disregarding traffic rules. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's security expenses were the highest, with Rs 710 million spent for his protection. The opposition claims the move is politically motivated, but the government maintains it is based on security assessments.
