Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), marking a historic moment for both the state and the nation. The new legislation aims to establish a common set of civil laws that apply equally to all citizens, regardless of religion. Key provisions of the UCC include mandatory registration of marriages, with the minimum marriage age set at 21 for men and 18 for women. Both spouses now have equal rights in divorce proceedings, and bigamy is prohibited. Women will have equal inheritance rights, and live-in relationships are now recognized and regulated by mandatory registration. Children born to live-in couples will be legally recognized. The UCC also bans practices like Nikah Halala, Iddat, polygamy, child marriage, and triple talaq. Despite opposition criticism, Uttarakhand's government has emphasized that the law is not aimed at targeting any specific religion but seeks to provide equal rights and justice for all citizens. This move is seen as a potential precursor for other BJP-ruled states to introduce similar laws, as Uttarakhand’s implementation could inspire broader changes across the nation.
