The BJP-led government in Uttarakhand has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, making the state the first in India to adopt a single personal law for all citizens, regardless of religion, gender, or sexual orientation. The legislation covers marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships but excludes Scheduled Tribes. While hailed as progressive, it faces criticism for state interference in personal matters. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed willingness to assist other states interested in implementing a UCC. Meanwhile, Rajasthan hints at following suit. With the completion of the Ram temple and revocation of Article 370, attention now shifts to UCC implementation.
