The government on Tuesday decided to increase the price of petrol by Rs 2.96 per litre.
The new price will come into effect from midnight.
A hike had been on the cards because of international crude oil prices touching 90 US dollars per barrel.
Petrol prices were freed from government control in June this year. State oil companies had in November increased the price by 32 paise, making it Rs 52.91 per litre in Delhi.
