The government would make common toll technology mandatory for car owners across India, Minister for Road, Transport and Highways Kamal Nath said on Wednesday.
"We will implement the common toll technology by the middle of next year and make it mandatory," Nath told reporters on the sidelines of All India Management Association convention here.
He said the government was also talking to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers for the same.
The government had appointed a committee under the Unique Identification Authority of India chairman, Nandan Nilekani, who had suggested this proposal, Nath added.
On construction of roads, he said although the target was to construct 20 kilometers of road per day, only 13 kilometer were being exercised right now.
In the current year, nearly 9,000 to 10,000 km would be awarded for construction, compared to 7,500 kilometer last year.
In West Bengal, the ministry had awarded 600 km at a cost of Rs 6,000 crore.
