A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court has prima facie held former telecom minister A. Raja guilty in the Rs 1.76 lakh crore 2G spectrum allocation scam and has decided to monitor the investigation being carried out by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The apex court on Thursday directed the CBI to probe the grant of spectrum licences since 2001. It means that the NDA government would also come under the ambit of the probe.
The investigation agency was told that their probe should have its emphasis on loss to the public exchequer.
Justice A.K. Ganguly and Justice G. Singhvi also sent out a strong message to the central agency and the Enforcement Directorate saying that they should not be influenced by any individual, their ranks, functionaries and agencies.
The CBI was asked to file a status report on the probe by February 10, 2011.
The Supreme Court told the CBI to probe why the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) did not take action against those ineligible for spectrum licenses.
The Directorate of Income Tax has also been directed to hand over the transcripts of the tapped conversations carried out under the order of the Home Seceratary to the CBI.
