Software giant Google is headed for a radical restructuring as the company's founders Larry Page and Sergei Brin announced the creation of a parent company called Alphabet and elevated Sundar Pichai to CEO.

43-year-old Pichai, soft-spoken leader popular within the company, joined Google in 2004 as a product manager, then moved up through the company by overseeing development of its Chrome browser. He is currently the search company's head of product and has overseen its day-to-day operations since October.

In a blog post announcing the changes, Page said that Google's R&D units -  including Google X, Google Ventures, Life Sciences, and the life-extending start-up Calico - would be separated from the main Google business, under the Alphabet umbrella.

Larry Page on Pichai's elevation in Google's blog post said."  A key part of this new restructure is Sundar Pichai. Sundar has been saying the things I would have said (and sometimes better!) for quite some time now, and I've been tremendously enjoying our work together. He has really stepped up since October of last year, when he took on product and engineering responsibility for our internet businesses. Sergey and I have been super excited about his progress and dedication to the company. And it is clear to us and our board that it is time for Sundar to be CEO of Google."

The management shakeup includes another move: Omid Kordestani, Google's chief business officer who just returned to the company in October after a five-year absence, will again be leaving Google to advise Alphabet, the company said in an SEC filing. It's unclear who will be his replacement at Google.
