Once hailed as the fastest growing industry in the country, the telecom sector has hit an all-time low in the past few years with incidents from the past being dug up and operator licences being quashed.
Being a highly regulated industry, it calls for strong authority at the helm.
If I were PM, I would confer the telecom ministry on Yashwant Sinha. A former civil servant himself he has also been a Cabinet minister previously. During his tenure, he handled his portfolio with great aplomb and was able to attract the respect of foreign investors.
Following the 2G scam, the not-so-successful BW auctions, the closure of services by certain telcos and 3G services not achieving the desired results, Sinha would be able to help it regain its lost conviction at this crucial juncture when we are heading towards the roll-out of pan-India 4G services.
