A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government will likely reform the railways first when it comes to infrastructure, expects Vinayak Chatterjee, Chairman of Feedback Infra, and one of India's leading infrastructure experts.
Narendra Modi, who looks set to be sworn in as the next prime minister soon, Chatterjee says, can use his proximity to Japan, to put railway projects on the fast track, bring in new technology for high speed rail projects, and boost operational efficiency.
"I expect Modi to set up a mechanism so that there are no logjams in infrastructure projects. He would probably have institutional interventions for quick clearances. There will also be a push on how commercial banks lend to the infrastructure sector," Chatterjee said soon after the election results showed a clear majority for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
The infrastructure sector has also been demanding a revival of projects executed under the public-private partnership model.
