Forbes' top 10 richest Indians list 2016

Mukesh Ambani

Net worth: $ 22.7 bn

Forbes' released its annual list of India's 100 richest tycoons and to claim the top spot is Mukesh Ambani chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd.

The oil and gas industrialist has also sparked a price war in the Indian telecom market with the launch of Reliance Jio.

Dilip Shanghvi

Net worth: $ 16.5 bn

Dilip Shanghvi's Sun Pharmaceutical Industries is the world's fifth-largest generics maker. The company's net worth improved after of sales of the generic version of Glivec, a leukemia drug made by Novartis.

The company acquired 14 drugs from Novartis in Japan for $ 293 million that will be distributed by Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma.

Hinduja family

Net worth: $ 14.9 bn

The Hinduja Group consists of four siblings, Srichand, Gopichand, Prakash and Ashok who control the multinational empire.

The Hinduja Group have businesses ranging from trucks and lubricants to banking and cable television.

The brothers are expected to open London's first Raffles Hotel.

Azim Premji

Net Worth: $ 15 bn

Azim Premji's Wipro is India's third-largest outsourcer.

Wipro accquired HealthPlan Services, an insurance-technology firm based in Florida, for $460 million.

In August Premji completed 5 decades as Wipro's leader.

Pallonji Mistry

Net worth: $ 13.9 bn

Pallonji Mistry's engineering and construction giant, Shapoorji Pallonji Group is a 151-year-old empire. It is now being run by his older son Shapoor.

His younger son Cyrus Mistry is the chairman of the $108 billion Tata Group.

Mistry's 18.4 per cent stake in Tata Sons is his biggest asset.

This year Mistry received the Padma Bhushan award.

Lakshmi Mittal

Net Worth: $ 12 bn

Lakshmi Mittal's ArcelorMittal reported net profit of $1.1 billion in a recent quarter, its best in 5 years.

Godrej Family

Net Worth: $ 12.4 bn

The 119-year-old consumer-goods giant has been on an acquisition bout. 

Adi Godrej's Godrej Consumer Products acquired 3 personal-care companies in Zambia, Senegal and Kenya.

Dairy and agribusiness firm Godrej Agrovet took a major stake in agrochemicals firm Astec LifeSciences and Creamline Dairy while the private unit Godrej & Boyce acquired online home-decor firm India Circus.

Shiv Nadar

Net worth: $ 11.5 bn

Shiv Nadar's HCL Technologies recently acquired Volvo's IT outsourcing arm for $130 million and simultaneously signed a deal with the Swedish automaker to provide software services.

His academic arm, Nadar University is partnering with Dell for technology projects in areas such as cloud computing and big data.

Kumar Birla

Net worth: $ 8.8 bn

Kumar Birla's $41 billion Aditya Birla Group, is under a restructure.

He annouced the merger of Aditya Birla Nuvo withGrasim Industries, followed by the demerger of the financial-services business into a separate entity.

In April Birla's UltraTech Cement acquired Jaypee Group's cement units for $ 2.4 billion. 

Birla's daughter Ananya founded a micro finance firm and an online venture to sell handmade products.

Cyrus Poonawalla

Net Worth: $ 8.6 bn

Cyrus Ponawalla was the man behind the Serum Institute of India that he set up 50 years ago.

Poonawalla is currently investing $150 million in a factory to make a range of new vaccines, including ones for dengue, pneumonia and diarrhea.

His son, Adar featured among Forbes Asia's Heroes of Philanthropy this year for donating $15 million to cleaning up Pune.
