AirAsia India has appointed CEO, clarifies Tony Fernandes

AirAsia India has appointed CEO, clarifies Tony Fernandes

"The board of Airasia India has approved and appointed a CEO for Airasia India. He will be a revelation. Thrilled to have him on board," AirAsia Group chief Tony Fernandes tweeted.

AirAsia Group chief Tony Fernandes tweeted on Sunday night that the AirAsia India board has approved and appointed a Chief Executive Officer for the Indian subsidiary.

He, however, did not indentify the person.

Air Asia, which is the largest low-cost airline in Asia has formed a joint venture with Tata Sons and Telestra Tradeplace of Arun Bhatia in a 49:30:21 holding to launch a low-cost carrier in the domestic market.

The venture received a formal approval from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) on April 4 to set up the company in the country.

"The board of Airasia India has approved and appointed a CEO for Airasia India. He will be a revelation. Thrilled to have him on board," AirAsia Group chief Tony Fernandes tweeted.

The comment came in response to a PTI report quoting an airline spokesperson as saying, "AirAsia India has not appointed a CEO". The spokesperson had said this in an e-mail statement to PTI from the airline's headquarters in Sepang, Malaysia.

The e-mail came after PTI sought confirmation of the name of CEO doing rounds in the industry.

Meanwhile, sources said AirAsia has not yet sought flying licence.

"They have not yet approached us for obtaining flying licence for their proposed airline," highly-placed sources in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said.
