SC dismisses bail pleas of Kanimozhi, Sharad Kumar

Opposing her plea, the CBI said original documents regarding the illegal financial transaction of Rs 200 crore to DMK chief's family-run Kalaignar TV was yet to be recovered and the accused might tamper with evidence if released on bail.

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected bail pleas of DMK MP Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case.

A bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and B.S. Chauhan pronounced its verdict after hearing arguments of the accused and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for one-and-a-half hours.

During the arguments, Kanimozhi's counsel submitted that she would abide by any condition that might be imposed by the court while granting bail to her. The counsel also said that she should not be deprived of her son's company.

Opposing her plea, the CBI said original documents regarding the illegal financial transaction of Rs 200 crore to DMK chief's family-run Kalaignar TV was yet to be recovered and the accused might tamper with evidence if released on bail.

The court asked Kanimozhi and Kumar to move a fresh plea in the special trial court after framing of charges.

Kanimozhi and Kumar have been accused by the CBI to be involved in the illegal transaction of Rs 200 crore to Kalaignar TV which was alleged to be a bribe given by a telecom operator which had benefited in the scam.
