Telenor explores alliance with Tata Tele: Reports

Telenor explores alliance with Tata Tele: Reports

Telenor is looking to either merge the assets of Unitech Wireless with that of Tata Teleservices or buy out the stake held by NTT DoCoMo Inc in the Tata group company, reports said.

Norway's Telenor is looking at a strategic partnership with Tata Teleservices to offer mobile phone services in the country, reports said citing sources.

The Supreme Court had ordered cancellation of 122 telecom licences issued in 2008 including 22 licences of Uninor - a joint venture between India's Unitech and Norway-based Telenor.

Citing sources close familiar with the matter, the reports said Telenor and Tata Tele have held initial discussions but a final call will be taken after the government announces the norms for spectrum auctions.

Telenor is also looking to either merge the assets of Unitech Wireless, its India venture, with that of Tata Teleservices or buy out the stake held by NTT DoCoMo Inc in the Tata Tele, the reports added.

Telenor's India unit had reported an operating loss of $806 million burdened by a huge impairment charge on its Indian operations owing to the cancellation of its 2G licences by the Supreme Court.
