Amazon.com Inc is testing delivery packages using drones, CEO Jeff Bezos said on Sunday on the CBS television program "60 Minutes."
Bezos said the drones, unmanned vehicles that fly through the air, could deliver packages that weigh up to five pounds (2.3 kg). That represents roughly 86 per cent of packages that
Amazon delivers, he said.
The drones, which would pick up items from Amazon's distribution centers and fly them to customer's homes, probably won't be put into use for four or five years, Bezos said.
According to agencies, the company has posted a demo video on its website, showing small robotic devices collecting packages from its centres and taking the aerial route to deliver the items to the customers after they booked their purchases. The video shows packages being collected just 30 minutes after the purchases were made at the collecvtion centres.
The drones run through electric motors and have potential to cover 10-mile (16-kilometre) radius of fulfillment centers, thus covering significant urban population.
The drones have inbuilt global positioning systems (GPS) which makes its easier to locate the delivery address.
