Adani's Mundra port and SEZ sets new standards in cargo handling

Gautam Adani's Mundra Port and SEZ had crossed the crucial 50 million metric tonnes mark in cargo handling volume for the year 2010-11

First generation entrepreneur Gautam Adani 's gamble to venture into ports business seems to have paid off with his Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) surpassing several so-called Indian major ports in terms of cargo handling.

The Mundra Port and SEZ, located in the Kutch region of Gujarat on Monday said it had crossed the crucial 50 million metric tonnes (MT) mark in cargo handling volume for the year 2010-11, an important milestone in its quest to emerge as the most preferred port in this region.

Aided by Adani's pragmatic business strategies and Gujarat Maritime Board's port and port-related business friendly policies, the Mundra Port has already become India's largest private multi-port operator and the 50 million MT cargo handling mark in a year has catapulted it to become India's seventh largest port.

"The cargo volumes at Mundra Port have leaped from 11.7 million MT in 2005-06 to over 50 million MT in 2010-11, a compounded annual growth rate of 34 per cent at a time when the maritime trade of the country grew at a rate close to 8.5 per cent," the company said.

Mundra Port officials said that now they target to achieve annual volume of 100 million MT of cargo handling by 2013.

"With Mundra Port's world-class infrastructure, best operational practices, proactive and customer-friendly management we are aiming at handling 200 million MT of cargo volumes by 2020 at ports managed by the company," said Gautam Adani, chairman, Adani group.

The company is currently operating ports in Mundra and Dahej. In 2010-11, it commissioned a 20-million MT bulk cargo handling terminal at Dahej. Currently, it is developing a multi-cargo port at Hazira in a partnership and operating coal terminals at Marmugoa and Vizag.

The Mundra Port has 13 berths of handling bulk, liquid and container cargo, two single point mooring units, a terminal for automobile handlings and a fully automated 60 million MT dedicated coal terminal with two berths.
