Six things to know about Nikesh Arora, among world's top paid executives

SoftBank President and COO Nikesh Arora on Tuesday said he will step down from the firm on June 22, a day after a special committee found allegations against Arora in a purported shareholder demand "without merit".

SoftBank President and COO Nikesh Arora on Tuesday said he will step down from the firm on June 22, a day after a special committee found allegations against Arora in a purported shareholder demand "without merit". SoftBank in a release said Arora will take on advisory role in the Group from July 1.   


  • Nikesh Arora completed his schooling from The Air Force School (Subroto Park), in Delhi. Arora graduated as an Electronic Engineer from IIT BHU in 1989. He enrolled himself at Northeastern University, Boston to pursue MBA.
  • Arora began his career at Fidelity Investments in 1992, he simultaneously enrolled himself for a master's programme in finance from Boston College.
  • Arora worked in T-Mobile in various capacities including as a member of the board. In June 2000, Arora started his own venture, T-Motion PLC, which offered value added services. But within two years, T-Motion was merged into Deutsche Telekom as a part of T-Mobile.  
  • Arora oversaw Google's European operations from 2004 to 2007 and was later looking after Middle East and African markets. Arora became Google's chief business officer in 2011. According to Fortune, he was responsible for Google's entire $29 billion in revenue.
  • According to Bloomberg, Arora won over advertising agencies that were originally resistant to embrace online ads and helped persuade them to train digital staff, who could help customers. Many of his strategies were adopted throughout Google.
  • As President and COO of Japanese telecom and internet firm SoftBank, Nikesh Arora was paid a salary of $73 million (Rs 488 crore) in 2015-2016, according to Bloomberg.
