The list of contenders for the RBI top post does not seem to end. The latest to join the fray is Kaushik Basu. Here are five things to know about likely successor to Raghuram Rajan .

 

  • Kaushik Basu is currently serving as chief economist and senior vice-president of the World Bank, Development Economics and Chief Economist since October 2012.
  • Basu graduated from St Stephens College (BA Hons in Economics) in 1972.  He completed his Master of Science (Economics) from London School of Economics and Political Science in 1974. He completed PHD in Economics from the same institute in 1976. He has received honorary doctorates from several institutes, including IIT, Mumbai, and Fordham University, New York.
  • Basu is currently President-Elect of the International Economic Association and will take over as President from 2017.
  • Prior to joining the World Bank, Basu served as chief economic adviser to the government of India from 2009 to 2012. He is currently on leave from Cornell University where he is Professor of Economics and the C Marks Professor of International Studies.  
  • Basu has received the Padma Bhushan which is one of the highest civilian awards given by the President of India. In addition to Cornell, he has taught at the Delhi School of Economics, Harvard, Princeton and MIT.
