Mamata to return 400 acres to Singur farmers

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced that her government would return the 400 acres of acquired land in Singur back to the farmers.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced that her government would return the 400 acres of acquired land in Singur back to the farmers - one of the first decisions taken by her at the helm in West Bengal.

The decision was taken at the first cabinet meeting of the newly-inducted government at the Writers' Buildings in Kolkata. "As per our commitment, the cabinet has decided to give back the 400 acres of Singur land to the farmers.

We will carry out the entire process following all legal procedures," Mamata told a press conference at the Writers' Buildings on Friday. She also invited the Tatas , against whose Nano plant she had protested in Singur, to set up their factory on the rest of the 600 acres of land.

She added that her government would try to resolve the Darjeeling hill issue and would soon come up with a special package for the three Maoist-affected districts of Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore.

Taking note of the overwhelming support by the Muslim voters to her party, Mamata said: "We have decided to seek advice from justice Sachar on issues related to the upliftment of the Muslims in Bengal. I have already asked chief secretary Samar Ghosh to pursue the matter."

A separate department would be set up to issue BPL rations cards.
