Shraddha Walker wanted to become a journalist, was in a theatre group in college: Friend Aaftab Poonawala strangled and chopped up Shraddha Walker

The 26-year-old Shraddha Walker, whose horrific murder has rocked the nation, wanted to be a journalist, said one of her friends. She was also part of the theatre group in college, but all that changed once Aaftab came into her life, said the friend.

Her friend and batchmate Rajat Shukla said that they wanted to become journalists and were in the theatre group together. He said that she was full of life and participated in all theatre activities but once Aaftab entered her life, she changed for the worse. He said that it felt like she lost all her charm and had become inactive. Shukla said that she met Aaftab in 2018, which is when she started changing, but he and other friends came to know of their relationship in 2019.

Shukla said that initially Aaftab seemed like an ‘ordinary’ person. Initially both of them started living-in in Vasai, but had relocated to Delhi for work, he said.

"She went missing and we weren't in contact with her. We prayed that Shraddha would come back safe and sound but when we came to know that she had been killed mercilessly in such a brutal manner and her body parts thrown in the jungle, it sent shivers down our spine and soul. This cannot be a love story, it seems to be a big conspiracy,” lamented Shukla.

Shraddha was missing since May, and texts and messages sent to her by her friends went unanswered. It was only when her childhood friend Laxman Nadar contacted her brother and informed her family that a police case was filed.

The investigation led the Delhi Police to discover that Shraddha was strangled and chopped up into 35 pieces allegedly by Aaftab. He allegedly bought a 300-litre fridge, stored her body parts and then proceeded to dispose of the pieces for 16 nights. Her body pieces were strewn in the jungles and garbage dumps in Mehrauli.

Her father, Vikar Walker, has demanded the death penalty for Aaftab.
