Artem Vaulin, 30, of Kharkiv, Ukraine was arrested in Poland by US Department of Justice on Thursday. The website has since gone offline.
Charged on two separate counts of criminal copyright infringement, conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement and conspiracy to commit money laundering, Vaulin will reportedly be extradited to US as a server for KickassTorrents was based in Chicago.
A federal court in Chicago ordered the seizure of one bank account and seven domain names associated with the alleged "KAT (KickassTorrents) conspiracy".
The website, which started on 2008, had gone on to become the most popular file-sharing site, even overtaking another The Pirate Bay in terms of monthly users.
